Social Media Sites: Here to Stay?

SEO experts agree that social media sites are the most pervasive and popular internet trend since the dot.com explosion. They also agree that, while there are vast similarities between the dot.com boom and the proliferation of social media websites, there are also some distinct differences.

Industry experts predict that roughly 230 million internet users currently belong to a social media site, and that the number will grow until 2009. By 2012, they believe, the number of new members will level off. 2012 should also see a combined social media site revenue of $2.4 billion, compared to $970 million in 2007.

Who belongs to social media sites? 35% of the total users are from the Asian Pacific nations. Europe, the Middle East, and Africa account for 28% of users, while North America boasts 25%. 12% of all users are from the Caribbean and Latin America.

As with all growing industries, many experts predict that consolidation is inevitable, with smaller social media sites being taken over by the bigger sites. Other experts feel that those small sites catering to a particular niche will be able to avoid the trend towards consolidation.

The hype over social networking is surely what drives the comparison with the dot.com boom. This, of course, causes experts to wonder how social networking sites will parallel the dot.com bust. Despite the popularity and predicted growth of social media sites, many industry experts are hesitant to claim that they are a sure thing. Because the sites haven’t been around long enough to prove that they will exist indefinitely, some investors approach them with trepidation. While many are interested in the potential for growth of the social media sites, there is some doubt as to whether they are a sustainable industry for the long haul. The most conservative experts recommend that most social media sites resist the IPO urge.

Even Mark Zuckerberg, founder and CEO of Facebook, states that Facebook is many years away from being able to float on its own, despite its popularity and astronomical growth.

There is certainly no arguing that social media sites are changing the way we communicate, advertise, and connect. But, as previous experience suggests, the excitement over new social media can’t last forever. Media attention and user curiosity have boosted revenues and creativity that will surely come to an end at some point.

Does this mean that social media sites have no future? Certainly not. The future looks bright for the industry, though it’s difficult to predict at this point just how big the whole industry will get. But given the uncertainty of the future of social media sites, investors would do well to prepare for the inevitable changes.

In a 2007 report, Ri Pierce of Grove Technology (also an analyst at Datamonitor, based in the UK) provided several tips to help companies manage these changes:

. Develop a two-pronged approach to dealing with social media sites. On one hand, determine how your company will manage the current popularity of the industry. On the other hand, figure out how your company will deal with the leveling off in the popularity that is sure to come. This requires companies to establish and maintain infrastructure required to run these types of websites.
. Find alternative ways of supporting social-networking services, particularly those that address scalability and availability.
. Social media sites should investigate social media optimization. Rohit Bhargava, Senior Vice President of Digital Strategy and Marketing for Ogilvy 360 Digital Influence, has established five rules for such optimization.
o Make it easy for your audience to tag and bookmark your site.
o Reward backlinks
o Make sure your content can travel
o Enable mashups, applications that combine data from multiple sources into a single tool.
o Increase your site’s linkability.

If you’re still wondering how to adapt your internet marketing campaign to the future of social media sites, you may consider consulting an SEO expert or internet marketing professional. They will be able to help you determine how best to plan for the future.

Why Reservationless Audio Conferences Beat Pre-Booked

If you’ve know a bit about the audio conferencing industry you will almost certainly have come across the term ‘reservationless audio conferencing’ but what does it mean? According to the Oxford Dictionary there is no such word as reservationless but it seems to have worked its way into the jargon of teleconferencing.

Reservationless, as the name suggests, simply means that you do not have to reserve your place at the audio conference in advance of the call. The host simply invites the participants to join the conference call by dialling into the audio conference bridge access number at the time of their choosing and the system will automatically set up the call. This might not seem like a big deal to some, but being reservationless offers you huge benefits over the pre-booked conference calls as we will find out shortly.

Pre-booked or reserved audio conferences
Back in the early days of the internet, some ten years ago, the only way to host audio conferences was to call up your conference call provider in advance and pre-book a conference call. You would need to specify the date and time you wanted to book the conference call for and also the number of participants and duration of the call.

The problem with this system, apart from it being a massive inconvenience having to pre-book of course, was that if more people than you were expecting wanted to attend they couldn’t and if your call over-ran then you risked being cut off. Moreover, you often had to pay for the number of participants you booked the call for even if they didn’t actually turn up on the day.

If you are thinking this all sounds like it was a bit of a pain, you are right, it was. Surprisingly, some audio conferencing providers still use this model today! Even though there is absolutely no need to host your call in this manner.

Why the move to reservationless conferencing?
It is only in the last few years that that technology has advanced to the stage where hosting reservationless audio conferences has become possible. Prior to the emergence of high capacity reservationless conference bridges, capacity on the systems was very limited and it was therefore necessary to manage its allocation very carefully. If too many people tried to dial in at the same time, customers were likely to get the busy tone or, worse still, be connected to overlapping conferences.

The billing systems attached to conference call bridges were also quite rudimentary meaning that unless there was a manual record of who was dialling in when and from where, it was impossible to bill the customer.

With today’s modern technology, pre-booked audio conferences are fast becoming a thing of the past with the vast majority now being reservationless. The one exception to this is a special kind of pre-booked conference call known as a managed event call. This is where human operators are used and therefore advance notice is still required. However, with the added use of an operator comes added cost.

Ex-Google Employees Try to Be Cuil

Cuil is a search engine conceived by former employees of Google: Anna Patterson, Russell Power and Louis Monier, all former Google employees. Tom Costello is also a major founder and has worked for IBM and various other companies.

To differentiate itself, Cuil organizes web pages by content and displays entries that are comparatively long. They also include thumbnail pictures for many results. Cuil claims to have a larger index than any other search engine, with over 120 billion web pages.

Unlike other search engines,Cuil’s privacy policy states that it does not store records of users’ search activity or IP addresses.

Now for the nitty gritty: how does it REALLY work? Well, its too soon to tell. But the first day doesn’t bode to well. Cuil was down for most of the launch day and suffered from heavy first-day overloads

Cuil’s VP of communications Vince Solitto told Rafe Needleman of Cnet that Cuil “will only improve with time. It’s day one. Traffic is massive. We’re new. There are bugs to fix, results to improve.”

When I searched for “free food” my first time using Cuil, I got zero results. Then I turned off safe search and it bumped up to 142, 853. The same result got me 66,500,000 results in Google.

Those numbers just don’t add up. Ok, so it might take time. But before we start comparing to Google, let’s wait for better results.

Another big wrench in its nascent “Google killer” rep? No advertising. Now, I like that, but if it can’t come up with an advertising platform to rival Google’s, it hasn’t a hope of besting it.

One of the biggest advantages of Google’s massive advertising platform is that it allows for better search results.

We do have to keep in mind that Google didn’t monetize itself at first either; that was a process that took awhile. But the people who created Cuil are ex-Googlers, so they would have known how important that is from the get-go.

Now, you might say you like the idea of less results that are more relevant as to more that are filled with a lot of junk.

However, how relevant are the results you’re getting with Cuil, really? I’ve used it several times now and was frustrated by the results.

But, I’m one person, so what’s relevant to me isn’t necessarily relevant to you. And that’s a major factor Cuil has to take into consideration as they go along.
Cuil claims it won’t monitor users’ search habits in order to target advertising the way Google, Yahoo, and Microsoft do.

That’s an admirable goal, but that information is what has allowed all the search engines to refine their algorithms and provide more relevant results.

The best Cuil is looking at for the time being is solidifying itself in a niche position and presenting itself as an attractive acquisition for the big kahunas: Yahoo, MSN, Google.

It remains to be seen how competitive it will get, where its creators will take it and how well it will perform. For now, I’ll play around with Cuil, but my real work will continue to be done on Google.
